You have overcome the first hurdle and secured an interview - well
done! You now have the opportunity to convince a prospective
employer or recruiter that you have the qualities and experience
they are looking for. The following suggestions should increase
your chances of success.
Before the interview
Research the company thoroughly including looking at websites and
press releases. This will demonstrate that you have a thorough and
professional approach.
Write down a list of relevant questions to ask at the interview.
Practise answering tricky questions and be able to explain why you
have made the career moves you have.
Make sure that you have your smartest business attire available - interviewers will expect you to look your best.
At the interview
- Arrive in plenty of time - check traffic conditions well in advance
if you are travelling by car. Always print off a map of where you
are going.
- Take along several copies of your CV and any other documentation you
may have to substantiate your achievements.
- Be confident - give a firm handshake when you are greeted and speak
clearly and concisely. Do not waffle! It is of paramount importance
to answer each question fully but not to stray off the topic.
- If there are more than one interviewers try and build a rapport with
everybody maintaining eye contact. I Honesty is the best policy. If
you do not know the answer - do not make it up!
- Do not be detrimental about previous employers - always emphasise
the positive experiences in a job role.
- At the end of the interview confirm your strong interest in the
role and ask what the next step in the process is.
